Russia reinforces its border with Ukraine – RT Russia and the former Soviet Union

“Large-scale” work is underway, the governor of the Belgorod region announced

A new line of defense is being created on the border between Ukraine and the Belgorod region in western Russia, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced Monday at a press conference.

The official said the move came in response to growing tensions at the border, but did not release details on the construction, warning that his statements are “to be listened to attentively by our enemies.”

“I will say it briefly: the work is carried out on a large scale. Since April, within the framework of our competences, we have been actively engaged in strengthening the borders,” he added. said Gladkov.

When asked if he was referring to the so-called “Wagner Line” – a system of anti-tank structures built by the Russian private military organization the “Wagner Group” in the Donbass region – Gladkov said he would prefer not to comment on others “respected people” and wanted to focus on the so-called “zasechnaya” line of Belgorod.

A “zasechnaya” line refers to wooden defensive structures, made of felled trees, used by Russia between the 10th and 18th centuries to defend against enemy raids.

“The Belgorod region has always stood on the frontier of Russian state defense and continues to do so,” said the governor.

After Russia began its military operation in Ukraine in late February, kyiv forces repeatedly bombed and launched drones against civilian and military targets in the area. In some cases, private residences, as well as a school and a kindergarten were hit.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented a “average level of action” alert in parts of western Russia. It grants regional managers additional authority to provide security and respond quickly to any emergency.
