The Paris 2024 Olympics kicked off last week, and if you’re wondering where the latest Mario & Sonic game is, it looks like the series is over.

Lee Cocker, an individual who has worked on “every game in the franchise,” posted an announcement on social media last week, saying the series would end in 2020 with the Tokyo Games. He then shared an image of himself with the president of the Olympic committee in 2009, where he demonstrated the release of the Winter Olympics.

“For people asking, there will be no @MarioSonicGames for @Paris2024, the franchise ended with #MarioAndSonic at @Tokyo2020. I know because I worked on every game in the franchise.”

According to Cocker’s website, he spent 14 years managing the Mario & Sonic Olympic franchise, overseeing external publishing, development, asset licensing, and ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality games on budget. He credits Sega and Nintendo for working with many top game companies over the years.

Cocker also responded to some comments about Olympic video game licensing, mentioning that he doesn’t think fans will ever see a “character-based” title like Mario and Sonic again. Right now, it appears the only developer with access to the license is nWay, which released the free-to-play Olympics GO! on mobile last month. This is also the first Summer Olympics in 30 years without a console video game.
