The boss of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, insists that he does not intend to move away from the team, saying that his animated comments after the defeat of 2-0 Sunday against West Ham United came from a feeling of responsibility for their poor performance.
United has been amazing at their worst high-flying season since they were relegated in 1974, Sunday being their 17th defeat against 36 games and ninth defeat at Old Trafford, which was once a fortress, and Amorim said that he may have to leave if their bad shape continues.
“Since I got here, I’ve been talking about standards, and I can’t see the team having these results, especially in the Premier League, and say nothing, and not assuming responsibility,” said Amorim on Wednesday’s media day before the Europa League final next week against Tottenham Hotspur.

“I have a clear idea of what to do. I understand the problems of the team, so I am far from stopping. What I say is that we have to play, and we have had this season, in the future, we must play, otherwise they will change us. This is a normal thing.”
United, who languishes 16th in the Premier League, faces a team of Spurs who also struggled at the national level, seated a place below the Amorim team in the table.
The final of May 21 in Bilbao, however, offers both parties a rescue buoy with a place in the Champions League next year.
Asked about which he would find more enriching, raising the Trophy of the Europa League or would qualify for the Europe Elite Club competition, he said: “The Champions League is more important, for everything, to prepare for the next season, and we are supposed to be in the Champions League, the Europa League here is not sufficient and you feel it here. This is the best way to help us reach the top. ”
AMORIM confirmed that he had proposed to pay for his united back-back staff to take their family to Bilbao next week, after being informed by the club that his coaches, physiotherapists and his support team should pay for these tickets.
“You know that we have a lot – people are going, a lot of changes in staff,” said Amorim. “Right now for our club, it is sometimes difficult to understand when to give and when to take.
“It is complicated that the club is starting to give other staff members – it is a really difficult position. My reaction was to help. Then we talked to the players and the players had the same reaction-everyone wants the staff there and their families there. ”
The lack of family tickets occurs in the midst of United Cost Reduction Programs which include their plan to eliminate around 150 to 200 additional jobs, in addition to the 250 jobs removed last year.
Amorim does not know what his team will look like the final next week, with Leny Yoro, Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven all the doubts of injuries. They will not appear in the Friday league match in Chelsea.
“I do not know if they will be available, we will try to push,” said the Portuguese. “All players want to play this (final of the Europa League) really bad.”
Amorim played for Benfica in the 2014 Europa League final, losing against Seville with penalties. The manager said that there was not much that he could not withdraw from this experience to help prepare his team.
“I played the final as a player but I lost and it doesn’t matter,” he said.
