Ruben Amorim: ‘We may be the worst team in Manchester United’s history’

Ruben Amorim has branded his Manchester United side “perhaps the worst team in the club’s history” after suffering another Premier League defeat, this time at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter were enough to secure a deserved 3-1 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday, a third successive victory on the field for the Seagulls.

United have now lost four of their last six league matches to move closer to the relegation zone (10 points) than the top four (12).

The latter figure was just seven when Erik ten Hag was sacked in October and Amorim knows everything must improve.

“In 10 Premier League games we have won two, I know that,” Amorim said. “Imagine that for a Manchester United fan, imagine that for me.

“You get a new coach who loses more than the last coach. Imagine that. We must survive this moment. I know that.

“We are perhaps the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know you want to make headlines, but I say this because we need to recognize this and change this. So there you have it, your title.

Asked to develop a form that has seen them pick up just 11 points from his 11 league matches in charge, the Portuguese called on everyone at the club to pull together to try and turn things around.

“It’s difficult to explain, we need to recognize the present moment and not skirt around the problem,” he said.

“Everyone here underperforms, no matter the circumstances. It is unacceptable to lose so many games for any Premier League club, let alone Manchester United. It’s a really difficult time but we have to keep going.

“The opponents are better than us in many details. That we cannot be consistent. That I’m not helping my players at the moment.

“It’s a difficult moment. We must recognize that we are in a very difficult situation. All the bad records, the home defeats, the Premier League defeats, we are really underperforming.

United next face Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday before traveling to Fulham in the Premier League next Sunday.
