Ruben Amorim says he is not enough “ mad ” to think that Manchester United can win the title of Premier League next season, but knows that he will not have as long as Sir Alex Ferguson to change the club.
Ferguson took six and a half years to win the title after his arrival at Old Trafford in November 1986 when he brought an unprecedented time of success to United.
The club launched Project 150 and Mission 21 to win their 21st title on the occasion of the club’s 150th anniversary in 2028. And although Marorim is in a hurry to get there, it admits that next season will be too early to start the United Champions again.
“I understand, I am not naive,” he said before the 196th Manchester Derby at Old Trafford on Sunday. “I don’t want to think that we need a lot of years to be competitive. I can’t think like that. I can’t manage like that. It’s not in me.
“That’s why I put pressure on myself. I know that we are not going to be the biggest competitor of the next year or two years. I know we have to do a lot. But I will not think like that and I will say that I need a lot of years.
“We are in a hurry. So we suffer a lot for next year to be so much better, and that’s our goal. Sometimes things can happen. So I don’t want to be this guy who says here that we need a lot of time. I will not be this coach.

“It’s not that next year is our goal. I’m not saying that we’re going to win the title next year, I’m not crazy.
“So I know it’s really difficult to do something like that in a year. We have to change a lot. We change a lot of staff, we change a lot inside the club.
“We do a lot, making standards. Sometimes we change players because they have not adjusted here, sometimes they have to learn to adapt to our new standards.
However, Amorim knows that he will not have as long as Ferguson to make champions of the United States again.
“The Premier League is so different,” he added. “I have a lot of people who say that Sir Alex Ferguson has taken three or four years to win something, it is not possible these days because you have to speak three times and give three interviews before each match, so the pressure is completely different.
“Any Premier League team can win. But we are Manchester United. There are a lot of good things, there are bad things. No matter the context, we must be there with the best.
“We will have to face a lot of adversity and many major teams, more than in the past, but let’s focus on this and try to win the next match.”
