Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana found himself at the center of the meticulous exam after being abandoned for the club match against Newcastle United on Sunday. Head coach Ruben Amorim revealed the reason for his decision to mark the Cameroonian player while his team underwent another defeat.
Onana, who has faced growing criticism for his bad performances since he joined Inter Milan for $ 61 million last summer, was not even included on the bench of St James’ Park. Instead, Altay Bayindir received a rare start. But the decision turned against Bayindir also made expensive errors in the match and they lost 4-1.
Amorim on the reasons for which he came across
Amorim said her decision to drop Onana was motivated by the need to leave the player “disconnect” after a difficult outing against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League last week. Addressing Sky Sports before the match, AMORIM supported his call to rest, explaining the importance of managing the mental state of a player.
“Sometimes you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little. Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next (against Lyon) … You don’t need to love him (that), but you understand because I explain each situation. The mental aspect is really, really important.”
Although Amorim insisted that this decision was temporary, the reports suggest that Manchester United is already preparing for life beyond Onana. According to sources close to the club, the Red Devils watch Zion Suzuki, a 22 -year -old international japan currently playing for Parma.
Onana’s difficulties have been well documented. Since the start of last season, he made eight errors leading directly to goals, more than any other premier league goalkeeper during this period. The last one came during the 2-2 draw from United with Lyon, where his poorly managed contributed to the two goals.
Manchester United is expected to lock the horns against Lyon on the second floor of their quarterfinals in the Europa League on April 18.
