Ruben Amorim allegedly smashed a television in the Old Trafford dressing room in a furious rant at his team following Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.
The result was a seventh defeat in 15 games for Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November, and a fourth defeat in the team’s last five home Premier League games.
Amorim, who later called his team “possibly the worst team in the history of Manchester United”, was reported by the Athletic to have gesticulated angrily in the dressing room when he damaged the television, which is being used for pre-match tactics and needed to be repaired in time for Thursday’s Europa League match against Rangers.
He had calmed down before speaking to the media on Sunday, although he made no effort in assessing his team which has slipped to 13th in the Premier League table.
“It’s unacceptable to lose so many matches,” he said. “For any Premier League club, then imagine Manchester United? The opponents are better than us in many details. I’m just here to help my players, but we have to understand that we’re breaking all the bad records.
“In 10 Premier League games, we have won two. I know that. Imagine what that means to a United fan. Imagine what it’s like for me. We have a new coach who loses more than the previous coach. I am perfectly aware of it.
Amorim, who enjoyed four and a half successful years at Sporting where he won two league titles before arriving at United, has a reputation as a calm coach who rarely conducts post-match training of his team.
However, he appeared particularly annoyed with the way his side finished the game on Sunday when an error from Andre Onana allowed Brighton to score a third goal in the 77th minute, and any hope of repeating his team’s late recovery previous match against Southampton was wiped out.

“Everyone was changing positions and that’s something I won’t see again. We can lose but we have to maintain our position,” he said after the match. “We are trying to have possession and control the ball, but the players are anxious. This is not acceptable.
