Rounds of rain, with spring snow on the way – NBC Chicago

Hopefully the April showers will bring the May flowers.

The forecast for Chicago for the first half of the work week looks soggy and humid, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, starting with heavy rain and rumbling thunder Monday, and ending with snowflakes with a potential accumulation by Wednesday.

“It will come in waves over the next few days,” NBC 5 meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said, adding that snow was likely Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures turned colder.

As the work week begins, here’s a look at the weather in Chicago today and beyond.

Monday

According to Jeanes, the overnight rain had cleared by Monday morning. However, the ground was still wet, with possible accumulations on the roads.

Around 1 p.m., the rain is expected to resume, with chances of rain and showers increasing as the afternoon continues.

Early Monday morning, the rain tarp was already in place at Wrigley Field, ahead of the Cubs’ home opener Monday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies.

“It’s possible the Cubs game will start, but rain chances will increase throughout the game if that’s the case,” Jeanes said.

Afternoon rains, heavy at times, are expected to continue through Monday evening and overnight, Jeanes said, with a marginal risk of flash flooding south of I-80 in parts of the counties of Kendall, Cook, Grundy and Will.

Jeanes added that scattered thunder and thunderstorms were also possible Monday evening, with pockets of heavy showers.

High temperatures on Monday will be in the 40s, Jeanes said.

Tuesday

Rain is expected to continue during Tuesday morning’s commute, Jeanes said. Tuesday afternoon and evening, periods of rain could begin to mix with snow, Jeanes added.

According to National Weather Servicethe threat of “slush accumulations” in parts of northwest Illinois was possible Tuesday evening and across much of the region Wednesday.

Tuesday’s high temperatures are expected to drop into the 40s, with even cooler temperatures on the way.

Wednesday

Wednesday is expected to be even colder, with temperatures falling into the mid-30s, Jeanes said, and chances of spring snow lingering through much of the day.

According to Jeanes, some minor snow accumulations could reach between one and three inches in some areas.

Wednesday is also expected to be windy, the NWS said, with north to northwest winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour at times.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, conditions aren’t expected to clear up for some sunshine until Friday, with sunnier and nicer weather conditions heading into the weekend.
