Inter may already have the Serie A title in the bag, but the race for the Champions League in Italy could go down to the wire.

Serie A is well placed to secure an additional qualification spot as the tournament prepares to expand to 36 teams for the 2024/25 campaign.

This means that fifth place – the position currently occupied by Roma – will likely be good enough for a place in Europe’s premier competition.

Inter will finish first and AC Milan likely second, leaving Juventus, Bologna, Roma, Atalanta and Lazio to fight for the three remaining Champions League places.

Of all these teams, Lazio have the most work to do. They are six points behind fifth-placed Roma heading into the weekend.

This is why the latest edition of Capital Derby is so important: there’s more than just local bragging rights to be won.

A victory for Lazio would put them on the heels of their main rivals. On the other hand, a Roma triumph would put them nine points clear of Lazio, potentially eliminating their main opponents from the race.

Lazio were in danger of falling to mid-table before Maurizio Sarri’s sacking, but back-to-back wins since then have put them back in contention for the top five.

Igor Tudor oversaw the second of those victories, guiding Lazio to a 1-0 defeat against Juventus last weekend. However, his team then lost to the same opponents in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday evening.

Roma, for their part, are on a six-match unbeaten run in Serie A, where they have so far only lost to Inter and AC Milan under Daniele de Rossi, who took the reins in mid-January after the departure of José Mourinho.

Roma and Lazio will resume hostilities in the Italian capital in a crucial Serie A clash this weekend.

Tudor immediately switched to his preferred back-three shape after taking charge of Lazio, and his players did a great job implementing the system in the first match against Juventus.

However, the Old Lady were worthy winners in midweek, and Tudor will need more time to get all their ideas across.

Paolo Dybala will score at any time – 11/4 (bet365)

Dybala returned to the Roma squad for the draw with Lecce, which was a major boost for De Rossi.

The Argentine only came on late as a second-half substitute and it is far from guaranteed he will start on Saturday.

Roma will be wary of sending back a player who has endured a stop-start campaign due to various fitness issues, but Dybala will do everything he can to be back in time for the derby.

Romelu Lukaku is Roma’s top scorer this season but he has only scored one league goal since January. Dybala has found the net 12 times in 2023/24, compared to Lukaku’s 10, despite playing over 700 minutes fewer.

Dybala is Roma’s designated penalty taker, providing another potential avenue on the scoresheet for the former Juventus man.
