For the second season in a row, Roma and Bayer Leverkusen will face off for a place in the Europa League final.
Twelve months ago, it was Roma who won. Edoardo Bove scored the only goal of the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico.
The second leg at the BayArena ended in a 0-0 draw, with Jose Mourinho’s side managing to blank Leverkusen to advance by a narrow margin.
All being well, this time we will be treated to a more entertaining tie. Mourinho was fired by Roma in January and the team became larger under his successor, Daniele de Rossi.
Leverkusen’s improvement since the spring of 2023 is well known. The Bundesliga champions are aiming for a potential treble by also winning the DFB-Pokal and Europa League trophies.
Remarkably, Leverkusen remain undefeated this season. They have now gone 46 matches without defeat in all competitions. That’s impressive enough, but the feat becomes even more extraordinary when you consider that Leverkusen have only drawn eight matches in these competitions.
It’s easy to forget that this is Alonso’s first full season as manager. De Rossi has only been at the Stadio Olimpico for a few months, but his counterpart in this encounter is not much more experienced.
The Roma can, however, rely on great recent European experience. They won the Europa Conference League two years ago and finished second in that competition in 2022/23, missing out on the prize on penalties.
THE Giallorossi are looking to go one better this time around, but Bayer Leverkusen are undoubtedly one of the strongest teams on the continent at the moment.
Indeed, the German team is the big favorite to qualify for the final. With the first leg taking place in the Italian capital, Roma will likely have to take the lead halfway through the semi-final.

There was only one goal in 180 minutes of football between these two men last season, but that was because of Mourinho’s influence in the tie.
The then-Roma coach delivered a defensive masterclass in the second leg of the 2022/23 semi-final, escaping the BayArena with a goalless draw that propelled them to the showpiece event in Budapest .
Mourinho’s credentials cannot be questioned, especially in knockout tournaments. But Roma have improved since his departure. De Rossi gave the team more attacking intent and the Giallorossi are in contention to qualify for the Champions League via their position in Serie A.
Bayer Leverkusen are rightly favorites here, but Roma won’t be impressed by the Bundesliga champions.
With the Stadio Olimpico crowd behind them, Roma will take their chances, but Bayer Leverkusen will not be intimidated by the atmosphere.
