Rohit Sharma surpasses Yuvraj Singh for this T20 World Cup record in his knock of 92 against Australia

Indian captain Rohit Sharma broke a record that was previously held by Yuvraj Singh with his thunderous knock of 92 in India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 clash against Australia, played at the National Cricket Stadium on Monday Daren Sammy, in Gros Islet, St. Lucia.

Rohit hammered 8 sixes in his knock to overtake Yuvraj as the Indian batter with most sixes in a T20 World Cup match. Yuvraj had smashed 7 sixes in the India vs England World Cup 2007 T20I match played in Durban. This innings is most fondly remembered for Yuvraj’s six sixes in one over against Stuart Broad.

The record for the most sixes in a men’s T20 World Cup match is held by West Indies’ Chris Gayle. The ‘Universe Boss’ hit 11 sixes when he hit 100 against England in the 2016 T20 World Cup.

The previous Australian captain, Mitchell Marsh, had won the toss and elected to field.

Australia, who lost to Afghanistan on Saturday, made one change by bringing in fast bowler Mitchell Starc for Ashton Agar.

The four teams from Group 1 can still qualify for the semi-finals. India is leading with a good net run rate of 2.425 and four points.

Australia has two points and a net rate of 0.223 compared to Afghanistan, who also has two points but a net rate of -0.650. Bangladesh is in last position with no points.

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said he was treating Monday’s match like a quarter-final – needing a win to make things difficult for Afghanistan in the Super Eight match against Bangladesh later on Monday.

“At this stage of the tournament every game has to be won, the pressure comes with that,” Marsh said during the draw.

India kept faith in the same XI that beat Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Super Eight matches.

Captain Rohit Sharma said he would have bowled first if he had won the toss.

“It (the wicket) looks good, I hope it doesn’t change too much,” Sharma said. “We adapted well to the conditions, so hopefully there will be another game where we can do that.”

South Africa and England have already qualified for the Group 2 semi-finals.
