Roberto De Zerbi confirms Brighton tried to sign Cole Palmer from Man City before Chelsea intervened

Cole Palmer has established himself as a Chelsea superstar – but he could have thrived in another team instead.

The 22-year-old was part of Manchester City’s treble-winning team last season but was limited to just 25 appearances.

Palmer has been one of the players of the season since his arrival at Chelsea.

Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup goals for the Citizens caught the eye of the Blues, who signed him in a deal worth £40 million.

And speaking ahead of his side’s home clash with Chelsea on Wednesday night – live on talkSPORT 2 – Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi revealed the Seagulls are vying for his signature.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Italian said: “We tried to bring him in on the transfer market last summer.

“Palmer’s qualities are obvious to everyone, but not when he played for Manchester City.

“This season he is playing very well, he is scoring a lot of goals.”

Warning his players about the versatile attacking midfielder’s abilities, De Zerbi added: “Palmer’s quality is very high.

“He is a problem for us tomorrow because he can start as a winger and come in or (play as) a number ten as well.”

Palmer has been nothing short of sensational since moving to west London, earning him a nomination for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award.

A stunning season so far has seen Palmer contribute 21 goals and ten assists in 32 top-flight matches.

Only City marksman Erling Haaland has scored more in the division than Palmer this season. Palmer became the first Chelsea player in Premier League history to reach double figures for goals and assists in their opening campaign.

Simon Jordan and Graeme Souness both agree Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is not ready to play at Euro 2024 with England, but back Chelsea’s Cole Palmer as a starter for Gareth Southgate.

His form has led to him being considered one of the “best” players in the world by Blues skipper Reece James.

Meanwhile, Graeme Souness has tipped Palmer to play an important role under Gareth Southgate at the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
