Robert Pattinson poked fun at any lingering hatred against the “Twilight” franchise in a translated interview for GQ Spain. The actor made his debut as vampire Edward Cullen in 2008’s “Twilight,” which launched a $3.3 billion film franchise spanning five films and turned Pattinson and co-star Kristen Stewart into global superstars.
“I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, ‘Twilight’ ruined the vampire genre,'” Pattinson said in the interview. “Are you still stuck on this shit?” How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.
When Pattinson last spoke to GQ in 2022, he revealed that he wanted the original “Twilight” film to be as edgy and emo as possible. He was 21 at the time and felt the angst of a young adult, but his vision for the film didn’t sit well with the studio.
“I wanted to make it as artistic as possible,” Pattinson said at the time. “We had this weird tension where the studio was afraid of doing things that were a little too emo and all that. I thought that was the only way to play. I spent so much time (on set) furious…I couldn’t believe the way I was acting half the time.
Pattinson remembers his managers visiting the “Twilight” set one day and encouraging him to smile more and not act too serious. His managers told him point blank, “You will be fired by the end of the day if you don’t stop doing what you’re doing.” »
“Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke revealed in 2023’s “Happy Sad Confused” that the movie studio also questioned whether Pattinson was good-looking enough to play Edward Cullen.
“When he came to my house he had black bangs for hair and he was out of shape because he was always hanging around the pub,” Hardwicke recalls of Pattinson’s audition. “After doing fun auditions (with Kristen) at my house for a few hours, I then looked back the next morning at all the footage I had shot and recorded and thought it not only worked in person, but also on screen. I had to be sure. Of course, in person I got carried away, but you have to make sure it translates (on screen).
“Then I sent him to Summit and he went to meet them,” she continued. “They called me back and said, ‘Do you think you can make this guy look good?’ I said, “Yes, I do.” Have you seen his cheekbones? We’re doing a makeover on the hair and everything and he’s going to start training and he’s going to look amazing. But at first, they didn’t believe it. He was walking around there with a stained shirt or something. It was Rob.
Pattinson was not what the studio envisioned for Edward, nor what fans expected. When the “Twilight” movie was announced, fan casting leaned heavily toward a pre-Superman Henry Cavill. After all, franchise writer Stephenie Meyer has publicly stated that Cavill is at the top of her wish list. Hardwicke, however, thought the actor looked too old to play a high school student. She managed to convince the studio to cast Pattinson, and the rest is history.
