Christoph SchöenbornWho was Archbishop of Vienna from September 1995 to January 22, 2025, expressed his support for civil unions and women serving as deacons and – as a person whose parents divorced when he was a teenager – he defended the awareness of Francis to divorced and civilian Catholics.
The 80 -year -old criticized the Vatican in 2010 for his refusal spent sanctioning high -ranking officials who were crediblely accused of sexual abuse, including his own predecessor in Vienna, Hans Hermann Groër, Who died in 2003 and never faced charges. Schöenborn then accused secretary of Cardinal State Angelo Sodano (Died in 2022) to orchestrate a concealment to protect Groër and shed light on the whole question by rejecting the accusations of office abuse as “small gossips”.
The Vatican, led by Benedict XVI at the time, reprimanded Schöenborn for speaking, declaring that only a pope could level such an accusation against a cardinal.
