Warner Bros has released the first trailer for The Knights of Alto (fka The wise), his mafia drama from Barry Levinson with Robert De Niro in two roles.
Screenplay by Academy Award nominee Nicholas Pileggi (The Freedmen), The Knights of Alto tells the story of Vito Genovese (De Niro) and Frank Costello (De Niro), an Italian-American couple leading two separate crime families in the mid-20th century. Genovese unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate Costello in 1957, with the latter taking leave of the mob after being injured in the attempt on his life.
The project reunites De Niro and Levinson following collaborations on the Emmy-nominated HBO TV movie. The magician of liesin which De Niro played Bernie Madoff, and Magnolia Pictures’ 2008 comedy-drama, What just happenedas well as the famous director’s previous films Wag the dog And Sleepers. The road to screens was a long one, stuck in development hell for several decades, before Warner Bros. Pictures will relaunch the project in summer 2022.
Debra Messing (Will and Grace), Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun) and Kathrine Narducci (The Irishman) co-star. Academy Award winner Irwin Winkler (Rocky, The Freedmen) produced alongside Levinson, Jason Sosnoff, Charles Winkler and David Winkler, with Mike Drake as executive producer.
Coming out of duds with titles like Joker: Folie à Deux And The Lord of the Rings: War of the RohirrimWarner Bros has a chance to redeem itself this year with a slate of promising titles, the first of which is Companionan animated sci-fi thriller that will be released on January 31. The studio releases Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 on March 17 and also A Minecraft movie (April 5), Ryan Coogler Sinners (April 18) and Final destination: Bloodlines (May 16) coming this spring.
