When Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that Kentucky would award its delegates to the former president, the tone in the convention center changed from its festive mood.
McConnell was accompanied by his wife, Elaine Chao, Trump’s former transportation secretary, who resigned following the January 6, 2021, shooting.
The reception to McConnell’s delegate announcement stood in stark contrast to the cheers from Trump allies when the party rolled out a new platform and nominated a man who McConnell said morally failed the nation and invited the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
McConnell, the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, will leave office this fall.
Shouts of “fight” were heard during the call, a nod to Trump, who could be seen uttering the word “fight” and raising his fist as he was carried off stage after Saturday’s assassination attempt.
After Delaware pledged to vote for Trump, members of its delegation raised their fists in the air and chanted, “Fight, fight, fight!”
Wyoming delegates did the same thing.
Idaho Republican Party Chairwoman Dorothy Moon, in announcing delegates for Trump, led delegates in chants of “Fight, fight, fight!”

Trump officially crossed the numerical threshold that secured his nomination, with a pause in the call to celebrate.
