Risk of severe weather in Massachusetts on Sunday. Maps show the timing and path of the storm
BOSTON – The WBZ NEXT Weather Team has issued a NEXT Weather Alert for the potential for severe storms Sunday afternoon and evening.
Risk of severe weather events
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of New England, including all of Massachusetts, at a “slight” risk of severe weather.
Any storm has the potential to cause damaging winds, hail and torrential downpours. There is also a small but not zero risk of tornadoes (currently about 2%).
What time will the storms start?
After starting the day with a few morning showers, we will experience a lull before a series of scattered showers, and storms will move in early in the afternoon. The line of showers and thunderstorms will then move eastward in the evening.
The watch time for potential storms is 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
It will also be much warmer and more humid Sunday, with temperatures reaching near 90 degrees and dew points in the 70s, providing the juice and instability needed for storms.
Persistent showers on Monday
There will be a slight chance of some lingering showers on Monday, but overall we are expecting a much drier and more pleasant day, followed by rising temperatures midweek as we approach the 4th of July! Sunday will be a day to watch.
The NEXT Weather Team will be tracking storms all day on WBZ.com, WBZ-TV and CBS News Boston.
