No.1 draft pick Harley Reid tore Fremantle to shreds in the Western derby and then took a light-hearted jab at AFL great David Mundy for giving him just one medal vote Glendinning-Allan.

Reid kicked three goals with 19 disposals, seven clearances and two contested marks in West Coast’s superb 16.9 (105) to 10.8 (68) win over Fremantle on Saturday.

The 37-point victory follows his performance in the 39-point win over Richmond, when Reid racked up 27 disposals, seven clearances and a goal.

Reid is the hottest No.1 pick in AFL history, and he well and truly lives up to his billing.

However, the 19-year-old was overshadowed by Elliot Yeo for the Glendinning-Allan medal, and he took note of the votes.

Harley Reid continued an incredible start to his football career, playing a starring role in the West Coast Eagles’ victory over Fremantle.

While being interviewed after the match on 6PR, Reid took aim at Dockers great David Mundy.

“I don’t think Mundy likes me, so I’ll give myself one,” Reid smiled.

The commentary box erupted in laughter before Mundy fired back at Reid.

“Well, if he could touch the ball in the first 10 minutes, I could give him more,” Mundy joked.

West Coast coach Adam Simpson says Reid is already exceeding the club’s expectations.

“We like what Harley does and our internal expectations don’t match what he produces – they (his performance) are much higher,” Simpson said.

“They’re probably just responding to public expectations. So I’m very careful not to overestimate him, because he’s 19 years old. It’s difficult to maintain that when you come into the AFL.

“While he keeps doing it. I think we should all enjoy it, but let’s not worry too much if he has an off day.

“Today he…kicked three and really energized the crowd and the players, but we don’t expect that every week.”

The youngster scored three goals with 19 disposals, seven clearances and two contested marks in West Coast's superb 16.9 (105) to 10.8 (68) win over the Dockers.

Reid’s growing popularity is set to rival that of Nic Naitanui and Ben Cousins in their day – not that the Victorian is letting popularity go to his head.

“I’m sure Harley will be the first to say it’s not about him,” Simpson said.

“It’s about all of us. I think we all appreciate the fact that he contributes the way he does.

“But I’m sure he doesn’t want us to say it’s about him, even though he’s a very good player and he’s helped us.”

The injection of youth has helped to energize the West Coast.

But their veterans are also performing at a high level, with players like Elliot Yeo, Tim Kelly, Tom Barrass, Jeremy McGovern and Liam Duggan all performing well.

Simpson is pleased with his team’s comeback from last year’s wooden spoon campaign, but says they are “nowhere near” the finished product.

“I’ve had a hard time telling our players that we don’t want to rely on Jake (Waterman) to kick five or Elliot to get 15 punts,” Simpson said.

“We just want a good football team, I guess.”

West Coast will aim to claim their third straight victory when they take on the Gold Coast at People First Stadium on Sunday.

The Eagles are sweating over the availability of defender Tom Barrass, who could be in contention for his tackle on Michael Walters.
