New Delhi: Rishi Sunak met King Charles III on Tuesday who officially appointed him Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Sunak made history on Monday after the ruling Conservative Party chose him as the first Indian-born British prime minister as well as the first Hindu prime minister. He is also the country’s youngest prime minister in nearly 200 years.
His cavalcade was seen arriving at Buckingham Palace in London.
Shortly after his appointment, Sunak arrived at 10 Downing where he delivered his first speech as PM.
Sunak had a clear path to victory after rivals Penny Mordaunt and Boris Johnson pulled out of the Conservative Party leadership race. Mordaunt, the last remaining rival after ex-Prime Minister Johnson’s dramatic withdrawal on Sunday, failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from fellow MPs.
The 42-year-old who won the leadership race on Diwali took over from Liz Truss who became the country’s shortest prime minister.
Sunak, who lost the Conservative Party leadership race to Truss last month, got another chance to script history as Truss battled criticism over his economic policies. Truss resigned last week after his debt-funded tax cuts budget sent shockwaves through the markets, sending the pound plummeting.
Sunak pledged to fix Britain’s economy.
Sunak is a devout Hindu, has an Infosys connection
A practicing Hindu, Sunak was sworn in as an MP in the House of Commons on the Bhagavad Gita. He is married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. The couple met while studying at Stanford University in the United States.
