It was the first time the Japanese icon had landed during his illustrious career.

Ringside cameras captured the reversal in all its glory as Inoue completed a 180-degree turn before crashing to the canvas.

The Tokyo Dome fell silent as Inoue got back to his feet.

But it must be recognized that he quickly repelled the shot and finished the round.

In the second round, Inoue returned the favor by flooring his opponent with a crunching control hook as Nery advanced.

The knockdown seemed to slow Nery down as Inoue began to get into his rhythm.

By the third frame, Inoue had begun to neutralize Nery’s jab, parrying his lead hand and coming over the top with a clubbing right.

In the fifth round, another left hook dropped Nery, but rather than looking to hold on and survive, he threw caution to the wind in response.

That proved to be his downfall, one round later, when the challenger was sent crashing into the ropes after eating a huge right hand.

The referee intervened and ended the fight while the 55,000 fans in attendance jumped for joy.

Immediately afterwards, Inoue welcomed IBF mandatory challenger Sam Goodman to the ring and confirmed that he planned to defend his undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super bantamweight world titles against the Australian in September.
