Richard Simmons’ death: accidental, linked to falls and heart disease

Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny has confirmed that the fitness guru died of natural causes.

In a statement shared with People According to the magazine, a spokesperson for the Simmons family said Lenny received a call from the Los Angeles coroner’s office, informing him that Simmons’ death “was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor.”

The rep also confirmed that the toxicology report “came back negative, with the exception of Richard’s prescribed medications.” Simmons’ family also expressed gratitude to fans for “their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”

The ’80s icon died on July 13 at his Los Angeles home, a day after his 76th birthday. He was found by his housekeeper that morning, who called 911.

“I don’t want people to be sad for my brother,” Lenny said in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter “I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought into people’s lives. He truly cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career offering help. So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life.”

TMZ The night before his death, Simmons reportedly fell in his bathroom after feeling dizzy and refused medical attention despite his housekeeper’s insistence that he see a doctor. He reportedly told her he preferred to see his doctor the next day; she complied with his wishes and helped him back to bed.

That night, Simmons shared his final message with his fans on Facebook, thanking them for their birthday wishes. “Thank you… I have never received so many messages about my birthday in my entire life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a wonderful rest of your Friday,” he wrote.
