The Netflix Ted Sarandos CO-PDG recently ceased its feelings about the state of the film industry, calling it an “obsolete concept” while speaking to the Time100 summit. But all the filmmakers who make films in the streaming giant do not share the same feeling.
While chatting with Rian Johnson when promoting the second season of his series of peacocks “Poker Face”, Business Insider asked the director-director, who is behind the “Knives Out” film franchise from Netflix, if he agreed with the comments of Sarandos.
“Obviously, I don’t like, because I like movies. I love going to see movies,” said Johnson. “But also, I have the feeling of talking to Ted, it would be a different thing from that taken and in a way I am launched in this context. So, I do not want to formulate this because I have a discussion on proxy with Ted here.”
However, Johnson was categorical that people wanted to see films in theaters. “I think theatrical is not going anywhere,” he said, pointing to the success of the “sinners” box office of Ryan Coogler and “A Minecraft Movie”.
“I think we have seen if you put a film that people want to see in theaters, they will present themselves for this, and this experience of being in a full house and having this experience is so important,” he continued. “It’s something I love and I want more in the world.”

Netflix has been focusing for a long time on the publication of streaming films for its global subscribers. This led films like the star of 2024 Millie Bobby Brown “Damsel” and the action film Ryan Reynolds / Dwayne Johnson in 2021 “Red Opinion” Logging of hundreds of millions of views on the service.
“We are in a transitional period,” said Sarandos at the top of time 100 of the state of theatrical versions. “People have grown up thinking:” I want to make movies on a gigantic screen and I have foreigners watching them and playing in the theater for two months and people cry and shots closed. “It no longer happens.
However, Netflix makes its own cinemas: Los Angeles’ Bay Theater and Paris Theater in New York, which are essential for the titles of the Streamers season, because they must have theatrical races to consider. The streamer also gave certain other titles a play, such as Johnson’s previous film “Knives Out”, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” of 2022, although it was only released on 700 screens. The next film “Narnia” by Greta Gerwig for the streamer is also defined for an IMAX race before he reaches Netflix on Thanksgiving.
For his part, Johnson hopes that the next chapter “Knives Out”, “Wake Up Dead Man”, which, according to him, will be published in the fall, will be in more theaters than “Glass Onion”.
“I want this in as many theaters as long as possible,” he told Bi, adding that he likes to work with Netflix and that they have been large partners. “We are going to put pressure on everything we can get in terms of theatrical, because I want as many people as possible to see it in this form.”
Business Insider contacted Netflix to comment but did not receive an immediate response.
