Sitting near the gate of her home at Sambhunath Pandit Lane, about 6 km from Sealdah court, Malati Roy awaited the verdict in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case in which her son Sanjoy Roy was accused .
Informed that he had been found guilty by the court, Malati said: “I have three daughters, I understand their (victim’s parents) pain. …Let him receive the punishment he deserves. Even if the court asks to hang him, I will accept it.
Roy’s sister Sabita, who lives down the street, said: “What my brother did was something unthinkable and horrible. My heart breaks saying this, but he should receive the ultimate punishment if he did it. The victim was a woman like me and a doctor.
Roy’s mother and sister did not visit him during his detention during the trial.
Calcutta police arrested Roy on August 10, a day after the rape and murder of the young doctor.
He was arrested in the barracks of a Kolkata Armed Police battalion – a former boxer, he became a civic volunteer in 2019.
After the CBI took over the case, Roy was interrogated by the agency and then sent to judicial custody.
