The scene is planned for a final force test of the 2024-25 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) with Mohun Bagan who will face Bengaluru FC during the confrontation at the top in Kolkata on Saturday. The two teams progressed to the final of the ISL Cup after winning the semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate, overcoming a 2-1 defeat outside with a 2-0 victory at home. While Bengaluru FC beat the FC Goa finalists twice, Mohun Bagan has overcome a rigid challenge of the Jamshedpur FC.
Before the two teams lock up the horns of the emblematic Yuva Bharati Krirangan of Kolkata, alias the salt lake stadium, we take a look at the way Mohun Bagan and the Bengaluru FC succeeded in the past ISL Cup:
Mohun Bagan Super Giant – Three finals (a victory; two defeats)
The “ Mariners ” have been among the most coherent teams since they joined the ISL with the eastern Bengal of Archs in 2020. Not only did Mohun Bagan won a second consecutive league shield this year by finishing at the top of the table with an eight -point cushion, they also presented in the ISL Cup final, including Competition to come.
Mohun Bagan had undergone a 2-1 defeat against the Mumbai City FC in his first ISL season in 2020-2021 and would again lose against the “Islanders” three years later, this time by a margin of 3-1. Their only triumph, however, came against the team they will face less than 24 hours, Mohun Bagan defeating Bengaluru FC 4-3 in penalties after the two games played a 2-2 draw at the end of the additional time.
On Saturday, Mohun Bagan hopes to do two out of two against BFC in the ISL Cup final and finish the double of the season – winning the Ligue Shield as well as the ISL Cup of the same season – after being closer last year.
Bengaluru FC – Three finals (a victory; two defeats)
As Mohun Bagan, Bengaluru also appeared in three ISL finals, although this is spread over a much larger period of time – the “blues” having made their ISL debut in 2017-2018, three years before the two giants of Kolkata joined the fold.
Like the “Mariners”, BFC had reached the ISL final of their first season to finish as the second best team, losing against Chennaiyin FC 3-2. Bengaluru, however, would rebound in style the following year, beating FC Goa 1-0 in the final of the 2018-19 season thanks to an additional strike from Rahul Bheke at the Mumbai Football Arena.
Bengaluru won his second title in the 2023 Cup final thanks to the second half’s goals of Sunil Chhetri and Roy Krishna, only for Dimitrios Petratos to level the scores with a penalty of 85th minute which also completed his hoist.
The memories of this sorrow will always be fresh in the minds of the men of Gerard Zaragoza as they take revenge on the lawyer at home of Mohun Bagan.
