- I spent 12 hours in a regular seat on a Berlin night train in Vienna.
- For less than $ 50, I obtained a reclining seat in a seat cart cabin with five other people.
- I traveled on Amtrak Sleeper Cars in private rooms, but I did not suit the shared space well.
In October 2022, I spent 12 hours in a sleeping cart on a night train in Berlin in Vienna.
I had already taken night trains in the United States, where I had reserved private cabins in Amtrak trains.
But it was my first time on a dormant train in Europe – and my first time in housing shared with other guests.
As I wanted to maximize my time exploring during the day, I thought that a night train would be the best way to travel through Europe. And at $ 40, it was the cheapest night’s train journey that I have ever booked. But finally, the ride was too uncomfortable to sleep, and I arrived in Vienna too exhausted to explore.
To get from Berlin to Vienna in 12 hours, I took the night train of Obb Nightjet of the Austrian Federal Railway.

The rail line operates night tracks between Austria, Italy, France and the Netherlands, and it goes as quickly as 143 miles per hour, according to the website of the company.

I reserved the first, which are cabins with six regular assigned seats which bow deeply. Some routes have private cabins, but mine have not done so.
“We recommend the sleeper or berth car for night trips. There is enough space to stretch. Assize cars are recommended for shorter trips,” Obb NightJet wrote in a press release to Business Insider.

“The quality of the trips depends not only on the cars, but also on the road,” also said the press release.
To travel by train, I bought an Eurail pass for $ 477, which gives access to most European trains for a defined number of days.

Some trains require only a Eurail pass to ride, while others, including night trains, lead to an additional reduced price.
Without the pass, the ticket would have been about $ 40.

With my seven -day Eurail Pass, the train trip cost $ 14. It was the cheapest night accommodation.
My trip started at the German station in Berlin Ostbahnhof.

I arrived about an hour and a half before my train at 6:53 p.m., so I had time to find the platform.
As my ticket did not include a meal, I caught McDonald’s food inside the station.

McDonald’s in Germany has various menu elements of locations in the United States, such as the Brown Burger hash.
Then, I went to the three platform after seeing on a screen that it was there that my train would happen.

The train arrived in time and I found and climbed on my assigned car, number 254.
Once inside the carriage dormant cars, I saw narrow and weakly lit corridors that opened up to small closed cabins with six seats in each.

I headed for my seat assigned in one of these cabins.
During my travel leg, three travelers were already in my room when I got on board.

Two others arrived in the early hours.
I thought the seat was slightly wider than a typical train coach seat.

He had two cushions and approached far enough to bed almost flat, but not completely.
Each seat came with a small table that slipped the armrest.

It was just big enough to keep my ticket and my phone.
Immediately, I thought the room was cramped and lacked enough legs for each traveler.

However, I was surprised to find a large luggage space on two rows of storage racks above the seats.
I wanted to load my phone, but I only saw two catches next to the window in my car. I had to communicate with other passengers to use them in turn.

An OBB NightJet representative told Bi that the new cars that started working in 2023 have more outlets.
Since I had already eaten, I jumped the food and used one of the two shared bathrooms of the car to brush my teeth. The bathroom seemed not to have been cleaned for a while.

“The toilets are still cleaned at the start of the trip,” Obb NightJet said in a statement to Bi. “In addition, our staff regularly do checks overnight.”
Back in my room, someone had turned off the lights. I tried to fall asleep but I found it impossible with the constant bumps on the ride and so many people around me.

I had barely personal space.
I tilted my seat all along, but I thought that the space between the back and the bottom of the seat made it difficult to make yourself comfortable.

I have not seen a pillow or sheets provided to the guests.
The representative of the OBB NightJet told Bi that pillows and sheets are only provided for guests in sleeping style sleeping cars, because the seat cart is not recommended for long-haul trips.
Although seats were allocated, I noticed that other passengers moved into the car to find less congested parts. I followed suit.

I ended up going to a different cabin with only two other people.
But I knew that someone boarding at one of the many night stops could start me at any time if I was giving a seat assigned to him.

Even in a less curved cabin, I could not make myself comfortable in such a bumpy trip or knowing that someone could wake me up to move.
I ended up staying awake until morning.

My train arrived in Vienna at 7 am, and I was so exhausted that I ran in town in search of a hotel that would take me so early in the morning.
Making follies on a hotel room on arrival for a few hours of sleep made me feel that the cheapest ticket in a night train in the end of the day was worth it.

Next time, I will reserve a flight or take a train with private cabins.
