Revealed: The insult that led to a famous Australian boxer nearly dying in a brutal knife attack at his home

A father-of-seven who brutally repeatedly stabbed a famous boxer north of Brisbane has lost his bid to appeal his conviction.

Israel Colin Buggy, 47, is serving seven years in prison for violently attacking Gympie boxer Danny Hawkins at his home on September 18, 2021.

Buggy arrived with others at the Hawkins home after the boxer made a passing comment about Buggy’s ex-partner appearing pregnant the day before the attack.

During the group’s interaction, Hawkins removed the plastic brass knuckles he was wearing when the fight began.

Buggy, who carried a 15cm knife during the fight, had pleaded guilty to one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

During Buggy’s initial sentencing, the court declared his crime a serious and violent misdemeanor, meaning he must serve 80 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

However, Buggy asked the Queensland Court of Appeal to set his sentence at six years and set the parole eligibility date at 50 per cent of his sentence.

Court documents indicate that Buggy had argued that the fight was not a direct result of Hawkins’ “innocuous” comments about pregnancy, and that there had been text messages between the two before the altercation.

“The applicant submits that this, in its full context, demonstrates that the offense occurred during the course of a consensual fight which was planned and encouraged by the complainant, and not merely a reaction to a perceived slight,” it says. the jugement.

The request was rejected Friday after Justices Dalton, Flanagan and Cooper found the original sentence was not manifestly excessive.

“This was justified in the circumstances of this case.

“The sentencing judge had a good appreciation of the context of the offense.”

Hawkins is a legend in Gympie, having fought with the iconic Fred Brophy boxing troupe for more than a decade without a single defeat.

Photos submitted to Gympie Magistrates’ Court show the accused arriving at Danny Hawkins’ home, including an unidentified man in a black t-shirt who is an alleged witness.
