After the conviction, a personal letter written by Dennis to his late wife was made public. It was composed after the death of Hoskins but before facing the court. The letter revealed the depth of his remorse and his sorrow.
“Dear Mel,” started. “Thank you for everything, for the children, for life and for the memories you left us. These will last forever.
“You may have gone physically, but you will always be with children and me not only in the photos of the house, but in our hearts and our thoughts.
“You are irreplaceable as a mother of Oliver and Madeleine, but I will always lift them in the same way as if you were still there by my side.
“Physically, you are not here, but I notice little things that help me guide when I am lost that I know that you played a role in.
“The children are happy, so damn intelligent and cheeky, all in one. I know how much you would be proud of them and I will tell them forever that, even when they are just in his bed, hugging their rabbits.
“I’m really sorry for what happened. I’m really sorry that children don’t have you. I’m sorry that our families have not posted you OP, as I told your mom just after it happened.
“Not a second goes in the day when I do not want it to be me instead and the only thing with which I agree, it is that I am the one who suffers in this situation, and it is not you. I don’t think I have to say that because it’s so obvious.

“We want to continue to be an integral part of the lives of his children and their future,” he said. “As far as Rohan is concerned, as hard as it will be, it is important that we have a very high relationship with him. Children deserve this.
Peter admitted that they had not yet received an apology from Dennis, but thought it came. He also clearly indicated that the family had not pushed a prison sentence.
“It would not be ideal for grandchildren to be deprived of both parents at all,” he said.
