A retired BBC sound engineer caught with more than 58,000 indecent images of children has been jailed for 10 months.

David Mundy, 85, had been uploading vile photos of boys as young as six for almost two decades before being arrested by National Crime Agency officers on April 13, 2022.

Mundy stored thousands of images on floppy disks, CDs, USB sticks and hard drives.

Officers seized 47 digital storage devices from Mundy’s Surrey home and 31 contained indecent images of children.

The Micro SDs were marked “Miscellaneous = boy canceled”; “A lot of Franze, Czechs, etc. ” and “multiple videos and pixels”, Guildford Crown Court heard.

David Mundy, 85, from Esher, Sussex, was sentenced to 10 months in prison after being found in possession of almost 60,000 indecent images of children.

The majority of images he uploaded were of boys aged between eight and 15.

Mundy used a peer-to-peer sharing system to obtain this material.

Officers also found a 15-page double-sided booklet titled “Films with Sensitive Content,” categorized by keywords, as well as several practical guides on accessing the dark web and ensuring anonymity online.

In an interview, Mundy admitted to first viewing sexual images of children shortly before retiring from the BBC in 1998.

He said he was unsure of the definition of abuse and claimed his interest was just for fun.

Nearly 2,500 images found on his devices were category A, the most extreme.

Mundy, of Esher, Surrey, admitted three offenses relating to indecent images of children and was jailed for 10 months.

Adam Priestley, senior director of the NCA, said: “Despite clear evidence showing the scale of his offending and the horrific nature of the content he repeatedly accessed, Mundy told officers that the footage he had recorded simply showed children having fun.

“This couldn’t be further from the truth. Behind every image is a vulnerable child who was raped and abused for the benefit of offenders like Mundy.

“At the NCA we are committed to protecting children and ensuring that people who collect this material, creating a demand for abusive content, are held accountable. »
