The Liberal Party of Canada, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, is on the right track to win the country’s federal elections, Canadian media projects, following a campaign overshadowed by the provocations and prices of US President Donald Trump.
The affiliates of CNN CTV and CBC both planned that the Liberals would win enough seats to form a fourth consecutive government. But with the votes still counted, CBC News said it was too early to say if it will be a minority or majority government – a party needs 172 seats to form a majority.
Former central banker Carney has led a wave of anti-top feelings since he won the leadership competition in a landslide after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned last month. He rallied the public against the threats of the American president to annex the country as “the 51st state” and made the defense of Canada a central element of his platform.
“I reject all attempts to weaken Canada, to exhaust us, to break us so that America can own us,” Carney told journalists at the end of March in response to the threat of an increase in commercial prices. “We are masters in our own house.”
The conservative opposition, led by the longtime parliamentarian, Pierre Poilievre, had been the favorite to win when Trudeau announced his resignation in January following disastrous polls, a serious cost of living and an internal revolt in his office. But Trump’s steep prices on Canada and threats to its sovereignty have radically transformed the race.
The polls are considerably left during the last week of the campaign, Hairy convincing certain voters that Carney could not represent the change that many Canadians said they were looking for dozens of polls.
Carney had never held his political functions before becoming Prime Minister. His decades in finance saw him direct governments through global crises and upheaval periods, including Canada’s economy in Canada throughout the 2008 financial crisis. As a governor of the Bank of England, he helped the United Kingdom navigate Brexit-who, according to him, said what could happen in the United States.
The idea that Canada must forge its own path outside of American influence has been at the heart of Carney’s messages since it took office.
Carney appeared throughout the campaign as an experienced professional in the political center which can manage the economy of Canada through a period of deep turbulence.
“I understand how the world works,” Carney told Podcaster Nate Erskine-Smith in October. “I know people who direct some of the largest companies in the world and who understand how they work. I know how financial institutions work. I know how the markets work … I try to apply it for the benefit of Canada. ”
Trump’s decision to receive a 25% function on Canadian steel and aluminum, cars and car parts, and threats for pharmaceutical products and wood rocked Canadian companies. It is a reality that Carney did not have sugar, warning “difficult days to come” with pressure on Canadian employment.
But the Prime Minister undertook to “build things again in this country” to make Canada less dependent on the United States: new houses, new factories and new sources of “clean and conventional energy”.
“My solemn promise is to defend Canadian workers, to defend Canadian businesses,” said Carney in March. “We will defend our history, our values and our sovereignty.”
Carney has not excluded continuous discussions with Trump, but he has also evolved to deepen links with more “reliable” allies. In an unusual decision, his first Prime Minister’s trip abroad was to Europe, where he spoke to French and British officials to deepen security, military and economic ties.
Many Canadians see Carney as someone well placed to sail in a trade war with a long -standing ally, according to experts.
“In a crisis, it is important to meet and it is essential to act with goal and forcefully. And that’s what we will do,” said Carney earlier this month when he positioned himself as the leader to face Trump.
