Republican National Convention security tightened after Trump assassination attempt

The Republican National Convention (RNC) is proceeding as scheduled following the attempted assassination of President Trump, and heavy security is visible around the venue, expecting tens of thousands of people.

“Multiple layers of security and multiple perimeters to get through to get in,” Fox News on X’s Bill Melugin wrote early Sunday morning from Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, where the RNC begins Monday and runs through Thursday.

Current security measures include extensive street closures in all directions around the arena, including K-rail barriers and metal barricades. Additionally, police are visible “everywhere” and regular helicopter flyovers are conducted.

Journalists covering the event had to pass through three layers of security to enter the venue, each time showing their press credentials. Security included Secret Service and TSA checkpoints, with metal scanners and bag checks.

“My team and I are in contact with those coordinating security planning for the RNC and we will continue to communicate closely as we learn more about this situation,” Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “We cannot be a country that accepts political violence of any kind — that is not who we are as Americans.”

Attention quickly turned to security at the event, which came nearly a week after a shooting that injured Trump’s upper ear at his Pennsylvania rally on Saturday.
