Report: Tua Tagovailoa was absent for most of Dolphins’ offseason work

A possible contract extension for Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been the subject of discussion within the team this offseason and it appears the lack of such an extension will impact Tagovailoa’s participation in the team’s offseason program.

The team released a photo of Tagovailoa at the facility in mid-April during an early practice, but Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports that Tagovailoa has not been with the team for most of their work. All of this work has been voluntary and Tagovailoa is not required to attend, although Jones notes that he has participated in such work in past seasons.

Next week marks the start of the final phase of off-season work. Players will not wear pads, but full team drills are allowed during OTAs, which Tagovailoa called his offseason focus in April. The Dolphins will hold a mandatory minicamp in June to close out the program.

Tagovailoa will face fines if he skips that work, which would raise questions about training camp plans if no agreement is still in place between the team and the quarterback.
