Former ESPN reporter Ed Werder suggested Colorado head coach Deion Sanders “would almost certainly accept” an offer of Jerry Jones become the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
“About Deion Sanders: I’m told he would almost certainly accept Jerry Jones’ offer to make him the Cowboys’ next head coach,” Werder tweeted Thursday morning, “which his entourage encourages him to pursue in this path and that Jones is in love with the idea.
Speculation surrounding Sanders and the Cowboys head coaching vacancy has reached a boiling point in recent days following the news that Jones and Sanders held preliminary discussions about the position in the days after their separation with former Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy. FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported Monday that the two Cowboys icons have spoken and that Sanders is considered a top candidate for the opening, with “mutual interest” between the two parties.
For his part, Sanders admitted to being intrigued by the conversation with Jones, while doubling down on his desire to stay in Boulder.
“Hearing Jerry Jones is really delightful and intriguing,” Deion Sanders told ESPN on Monday night, via ESPN insider Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and I believe in Jerry. After hanging up, processing and thinking about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything about our team, coaches, student body and community.
Sanders, 57, has been linked to the Cowboys job given his longtime ties to Dallas. Sanders played five seasons with the Cowboys (1995-99) and was one of the biggest stars on Dallas’ last Super Bowl-winning team in 1995.
Adam Schefter reveals where Deion Sanders is in the interview process
Thursday morning Get upSchefter said there remains mutual interest between Sanders and the Cowboys. This is especially true when Jerry Jones has to do little research on him, given their familiarity with each other over the past three decades.
“Meanwhile, when talking about the Dallas Cowboys and what they do next, everyone has been focused on Deion Sanders and the conversations he’s had so far with Jerry Jones,” Schefter said . “Now my understanding is that no interviews are being arranged, conversations will continue. Deion told me he was intrigued by the position and, clearly, Jerry Jones was too. These two men know each other so well. They don’t need to have a lot of conversations.
However, Dallas will also continue to look elsewhere with other NFL candidates.
“In the meantime, Dallas is looking for other coaching candidates. They have contacted and will interview Robert Saleh, the former head coach of the Jets. They will interview former Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier.
