Removing Trump from primary election would ‘tear the country apart’: David Axelrod

News

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod warned Friday that a court ruling excluding former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot would “rip the country apart.”

“I have very, very strong reservations about all of this,” Axelrod said on CNN on Friday.

“I think it would tear the country apart if he was actually blocked from running because tens of millions of people want to vote for him.”

Axelrod said Democrats’ best chance of beating Trump lies in the polls.

“I think if you want to beat Donald Trump, you’re probably going to have to do it at the ballot box,” he continued.

The former political consultant argued that Maine’s decision to remove the Republican candidate from the state’s primary ballot fit into Trump’s narrative that the Democratic Party is “only going after him” because of his candidacy in the presidential election.

“A lot of the motivation for (Trump’s) candidacy was a legal defense strategy,” Axelrod said.

“He wanted to set up a construct … that says they’re going after him because he’s running for president, and they’re trying to stop him from being president.”

Axelrod said the left’s efforts to impeach Trump have backfired and that he has only “gained” popularity since his numerous indictments.

“We ran this experiment, he’s only won since he started getting indicted,” he said.

“What you thought was kryptonite for him turned out to be batteries, and that’s a big deal for him,” Axelrod said.

A ruling earlier this month by the Colorado Supreme Court removed Trump from the ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

Colorado’s secretary of state then announced she would keep Trump on the ballot pending the state Republican Party’s appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Colorado is a Democratic-leaning state that is not expected to be competitive for Republicans in November.

On Thursday, December 28, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows disqualified former President Trump from the state’s primary ballot.

Bellows also cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which bars those who “engage in insurrection” from holding office.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to make a final decision on Trump’s electability.
