Grand Forks, ND – The University of Dakota of the North mourns the loss of former student-athlete unde Deng MayarDied on Saturday August 16, 2025. He was 22 years old.
Mayar was a member of the male basketball teams 2023-24 and 2024-25 und and was preparing to play for the University of Nebraska in Omaha in the coming season.
As a member of the male basketball program of the North Dakota, Mayar appeared in 42 games and collected on average 5.7 points per game to help the Fighting Hawks to an appearance in the semi-finals of the Summit League tournament in 2024-25.
“Our hearts are shattered to hear the new tragic of Deng’s death,” said Und male basketball coach Paul Sather. “It was a wonderful person with a heart of the size of a gym. Our thoughts are with his parents and his family, as well as all his teammates from Und and Uno. As competitive as he was on the ground, he had a gentle nature and a kind soul out of the field. Deng will miss all those who knew and loved him.”
Mayar was from Salt Lake City, Utah, and before playing for und, he was a member of the male basketball team of Howard Junior College.
UND extends its deepest condolences to the family, teammates, friends and classmates from Deng. They are all in our thoughts and prayers.
