The Red Sox have placed outfielder Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day injured list with knee inflammation, the team announced before Wednesday’s game.

The decision, which comes just hours after O’Neill underwent precautionary imaging, is retroactive to May 26. Infielder Enmanuel Valdez was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to fill his spot on the active roster.

“I think we did everything we could to keep him on the field. He did everything possible to stay on the field. He should be back soon,” manager Alex Cora said before Boston’s 6-1 loss to the Orioles, according to the Globe’s Julian McWilliams.

O’Neill missed his fourth straight game Wednesday, following an early exit from Saturday’s game against the Brewers. The outfielder told reporters he had been dealing with persistent pain in his right knee “for a little while.”

“It just escalated a little more than I wanted it to. The coaches noticed it and took me out of the game,” O’Neill said, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith.

O’Neill is hitting .236 so far this season and is 11-for-73 (.151) with 36 strikeouts in May. His replacement, Valdez, 25, hit .156 in 28 games with the Red Sox this season.

After a disappointing three-game series in Baltimore, the Red Sox begin a home series against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.
