The Red Sox announced this afternoon that they had placed the inner field player Romy Gonzalez On a wounded list of 10 days due to a left quad bruise. Interior player Nick Sogard was called Triple-A to replace Gonzalez on the active list.
Gonzalez’s loss is particularly devastating for Boston since it fills Triston Casas At the first goal, after the latter, underwent knee surgery at the end of the season. The combination of Toro and Sogard with the first goal is not exactly inspiring. Toro is a career striker .219 / .283 / .350 in the majors who only went 2-in-14 with two sticks to the stick and zero walks or additional basic tubes at the large league at this stage of the year. Sogard, meanwhile, obtained his only major action in the league last year when the Red Sox relied on him as a public service man in 31 games. During this brief look in the majors, Sogard reached a level higher than the average .273 / .326 / .325 with a 29.1%withdrawal rate. Gonzalez’s possible return should help things, and fortunately, the nature of his injury does not seem serious enough for a prolonged absence to be expected.
Even so, it should be assumed that the Red Sox examines other options given the disturbing state of the first base. If Devers is still not an option to work for the first goal, the team may balance a minor job to add a depth option like DJ Stewart,, Dominic SmithOr Joey Messes which is not currently on a list of 40 men. None of these names would have particularly impactful, but the fact that the main trades at this stage of the calendar tend to be extremely rare figures to limit external options of Boston.
