The earthquake also removed the Argentine coast; The warning of Chile concerns the areas of the most southern region of Magallanes.
Chilean authorities have issued a warning from Tsunami and ordered evacuations after an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina.
Friday, the Chilean National Service for disaster prevention and the response published a “red alert” for the coastal areas in its most southern region of Magallanes and the Antarctic territory of the country due to the risk of tsunami.
In an article on its website, the agency said hundreds of people had been evacuated from a handful of communities, including the city of Puerto Williams.
“The national prevention and response system to disasters continues to assess the impact on people and damage to basic infrastructure and services,” he added.
No damage or victim was initially reported.
The earthquake struck Drake’s passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica at a depth of only 10 km (six miles), said United States Geological Survey.
Magallanes is the largest and most southern region in Chile and one of its less populated. According to government figures in 2017, the population totaled around 166,000 people.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric said all the country’s resources were available to respond to the earthquake.
“We are calling for the evacuation of the coastline throughout the Magallanes region,” he wrote in an article on social networks. “Currently, our duty is to prepare and take into account the authorities.”
Videos on social networks have shown people who are calmly evacuating while the sirens clashed in the background.
The hydrographic and oceanographic service of Chile (Shoa) estimated that the waves will reach bases in Antarctica and the cities of extreme southern Chile in the coming hours.
Meanwhile, in the Argentine city of Ushuaia, considered the southernmost, local authorities suspended all types of nautical activities and navigation in the Beagle channel for at least three hours.
“The earthquake was felt mainly in the city of Ushuaia and, to a lesser extent, in the cities of the province,” local government reported. “Faced with these types of events, it is important to stay calm.”
