Chicago is world-renowned for its nightlife, with a recent ranking of the best bars in North America helping to solidify the city’s status as one of the best places to spend a night out on the continent.
The list, compiled by “50Best,” solicited the experiences and opinions of 270 industry experts across North America, with each voter voting seven times for their best bar experience over the previous 18 months.
According to the publication, the method of not nominating or applying to be on the list helps ensure an unbiased and varied outcome, with a wide range of travel and experiences among the experts.
American bars make up just over half of the list, with 26 of the 50 awarded bars located in the United States. Of the remaining 24 bars, 15 are in Mexico, seven in Canada and two in the Caribbean.
Chicago was the only Midwestern city to make the list, with three Windy City bars making the 2024 rankings.
Kumiko, located at 630 W. Lake Street, was named the 19th best bar in North America and best bar in the Midwest, praised for its minimalist interior and seasonal drinks.
Meadowlark, located in the Logan Square neighborhood at 2812 W. Palmer Street, comes in at No. 32 on the list.
Newly opened in 2022, Meadowlark specializes in uniquely themed cocktails and mocktail versions of many offerings.
Chicago’s representation on the list was closed by Best Intentions, another Logan Square bar ranked 48th by 50Best.
Located at 3281 W. Armitage Avenue, the “neo-dive” bar has been praised for its undeniable Midwestern character, ambiance and innovative drink offerings.
As for best bar in North America, Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City took home the title, offering everything from a secret bar to sleek design and drinks that deliver “an explosion of unexpected flavors.”
