Rebecca Yarros Reveals ‘Onyx Storm’ Cover: EXCLUSIVE

The “Onyx Storm” cover signals an ominous turn in the series, with an all-black design and the tagline: “Brave the dark.”

“Fourth Wing,” the first book in the series, was a bright gold color with the banner: “Fly…or Die.” Its fiery red sequel, “Iron Flame,” read: “Burn It.”

Yarros announced the third book, “Empyrean,” on Instagram in March.

“There will be politics, new adventures, old enemies and of course, dragons,” she teased at the time.

The Empyrean series, a must-read from BookTok, follows Violet Sorrengail, a dragon rider trying to survive in the unforgiving world of Basgiath War College as war brews outside the gates of her home turf of Navarre.

Add to that a love triangle (it is romance, after all) between Violet, her childhood best friend Dain, and the son of a rebellion leader, and you have the novels’ exhilarating premise.

As of July 8, “Fourth Wing,” released in May 2023, has spent 60 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. “Iron Flame” follows closely behind with an impressive 34 weeks.

While Yarros plans five books in total in the series, a television adaptation of “Fourth Wing” is already in the works with Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society, Deadline reported.

Yarros told TODAY.com in 2023 that “The Empyrean” series was “fully planned” at five books.

“I think it really speaks to the theme of history: who is allowed to tell our story, and what happens when only the people in power are the ones recording our story,” she said.

Part of the inspiration for the heroine Violet, who is described as suffering from a chronic illness that affects the body’s connective tissue, comes from Yarros.

“Violet has a chronic illness: she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is a condition I also have. It’s really incredible to have readers reach out to me and say that it’s touched them, especially those of us who have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, to be able to see a heroine like us with a chronic illness,” she said.
