Readers outrage over Meghan’s disrespectful bow on Netflix

[ad_1]

No element of the first three hours of the Harry & Meghan documentary series inspired more astonishment and outrage than the moment the Duchess of Sussex recreated her bow to the late Queen.

On the Netflix show, Meghan smiled broadly as she performed the gesture, tilting her head in her lap, spreading her arms theatrically in a display of mock subservience.

Harry, for his part, looks impassive – and not a bit embarrassed.

In response to MailOnline’s story about the incident, readers didn’t hold back – amassing 8,700 comments by the time the Mail went to press last night.

As detailed below, the vast majority of them express deep disappointment at Meghan’s ‘childishness’ and ‘disrespect’. . .

Kudos to the film crew. It truly is a classic television moment. As she shows her complete lack of class, ridiculing royal protocol by pretending to curtsey while sitting on a sofa, she is completely oblivious to the utter embarrassment on Harry’s face.

This muscular bow was such a huge and direct insult to the memory of our Queen and the monarchy in general. Unforgivable.

How could this man, born into British royalty, allow his actress wife to ridicule his grandmother, our beloved late queen, in such a mean way? No one has ever bowed or curtsied before the Queen or King Charles in this way. This man needs to cultivate a pair.

Watching Meghan mock the Queen made me very sick. Fortunately, not all Americans show such disdain for the UK, and especially for the royal family. Michelle Obama, who is far more revered around the world, has shown respect for the monarchy. Watching Harry just sit during Meghan’s over-the-top curtsey is disgusting.

She might think it’s ridiculous – and, indeed, it might be – but bowing is an act of respect steeped in years of tradition. I guess she just couldn’t understand some traditions, while others, like private security, a big clothing allowance, and titles.

Too dense to understand that the bow or bow is to the crown and not the individual – and that’s just Harry.

Harry, how could you sit there and watch her show such disrespect to the Queen, mimicking a pantomime bow? Your Queen, your ‘Commander in Chief’, your ‘Gran’? It made me sick.

So this woman spent her life in acting classes, auditioning for Hallmark movies and, in her own words, watching The Princess Diaries — and dare I say watching Disney, because she knew all about La Petite Mermaid – and she didn’t know how to curtsy. And she’s supposed to be the smartest. Even three-year-olds know how to curtsy.

I think of Mrs. [sic] Markle’s bow before Her Majesty’s coffin, exaggerated to the point that it was feared she might break her hip, made me wonder at the time, “Is she genuine or is she making a travesty ? Is she mocking the Queen in front of millions?

I gave him the benefit of the doubt at the time. I guess I was wrong.

Meghan expected people to curtsey to her as Duchess. It’s the same old story of Meghan wanting to be at the top of the tree and treated like the princess she thinks she is.

London

How obsessed with yourself must you be and have the right – and, I might add, lack common courtesy – to mock the British tradition of paying homage to the monarch with a bow or bow? Americans won’t put up with it if we mock or deride their institutions or traditions — as Harry discovered when he called their First Amendment lunatics.

Who do Harry and Meghan think they are? Let’s hope that this docu-fiction, which is even more fictional than recent episodes of The Crown, will mark the beginning of their descent into disgrace and then oblivion.

London

I don’t know which is worse, Meghan mocking the late Queen, or Harry allowing Meghan to do it in front of his own eyes!

In December 2018, Meghan was bowed during a visit to the Royal Variety Charity nursing and care home at Brinsworth House, Twickenham.

A bow while standing. She makes a theatrical curtsy and is completely disrespectful while Harry smiles next to her. Totally shameful.

I wonder if Harry ever wakes up, looks at her and thinks, ‘What have I done?’ As she sits there, mocking a curtsey, he sits there expressionless. This supports the idea that he is okay with what she is doing.

The comments of reverence are therefore clearly an attempt to turn a gesture of respect towards Her Majesty into a pantomime. It’s just good manners when you’re invited to the Palace. No need to make a big deal out of it. So childish.

London

Whether or not it was odd to curtsy to the Queen at a private lunch when she first met is beside the point. First, every member of the family does, including their own daughter (as evidenced by their bow at the passing of the Queen’s coffin).

Second, a woman of the age of the late queen is the ultimate matriarch in virtually every society. Such a lady is the head of any family and deference should be shown whether she is queen or pauper.

For Harry, not firing Meghan for poking fun at this label is bad enough, but for Meghan, poking fun at her very first meeting with the Queen is excruciating. Don’t say anything or always show respect.

The royal couple attended the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium in 2018 where they again received a curtsy as they arrived at the event.

It’s amazing that Meghan seems surprised that other royals aren’t slobs in sweatpants banging each other and drinking beer at a behind-closed-doors barbecue.

Did she really expect the queen to be just someone’s grandmother in slippers? Seems like it’s part of the problem she’s had with family – expectation versus reality. Yes, you curtsy; no, you’re not cuddling. Yes, there is a protocol to follow; no, it’s not a Disney story.
