Bill Walton made an appearance at TD Garden when the Celtics faced the Warriors in the 2022 NBA Finals.

Following the death of Bill Walton on Monday at age 71, the Celtics released the following statement. Walton played for the Celtics for two seasons in the 1980s and was a key part of their 1985-86 championship team, considered by some to be the greatest team in NBA history.

“Bill Walton was one of the most memorable players of his era. A Hall of Famer, Most Valuable Player and two-time NBA champion, Walton could do it all, possessing excellent timing, complete court vision, excellent fundamentals and was one of the greatest passers in the history of the league. He derived great joy from basketball and music, and deeply cherished his times with his teammates and friends.

“As a Celtic, Bill overcame years of debilitating injuries, rediscovered his joy of playing and helped guide the Boston Celtics to the 1986 championship with his play and spirit.

“The Boston Celtics celebrate Bill’s wonderful life and legacy and send our deepest condolences to the Walton family.”
