RB Leipzig sack Tedesco after Champions League home debacle

RB Leipzig parted ways with coach Domenico Tedesco on Wednesday after a poor start to the Bundesliga and a 4-1 home loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Shakhtar came to Leipzig with a weakened squad after losing most of their foreign players to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the team scored on four of their five shots on goal.

Tedesco took over in December last year and helped them move from 11th place to fourth and a Champions League place. He also led them to the German Cup, their first major trophy.

But the side have managed just one win in five Bundesliga league games, including a 4-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt last week.

“After our lackluster start to the Bundesliga season with five points from five games, as well as recent losses to Eintracht and Shakhtar, we believe a change of direction is the right course of action to turn things around quickly,” said club CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. said in a statement.

Leipzig face Borussia Dortmund, co-best in the league with Freiburg, on Saturday, before a trip to Real Madrid next Wednesday.
