I recently asked if Jey Uso would choose gold over family. He oscillates between being a good brother and a man only for himself. Every time he seemed on the verge of giving in firmly to the temptation of the championship, he chose his brother. But always reluctantly and always with harsh words for Big Jimmy Uso.
This all came to a head this week in a battle royal with a championship match next Saturday night’s main event on the line. And yes, I got my answer.
How did we get here? Glad you asked. Adam Pearce vacated the World Heavyweight Championship, but not before berating The Vision for putting him and Seth Rollins in this position. Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed looked cool and menacing in sunglasses while GM Pearce turned red after yelling at them, putting Seth out of commission for who knows how long. Although I still think it’s early for him to actually be champion, the title seemed well on Bron’s shoulder. It’s a good glimpse into the future that we all know is inevitable. After reluctantly returning the championship to the GM, the Bron Boys were dismayed at being left off the Battle Royal guest list. This only invites more violence from them and makes me wonder what conspiracy is at play to keep them from interfering in the championship game. Paul E. Heyman tried to convince Adam to give his boys a place, but no dice. This led to this awesome exchange with The Man:
Praise the person you are praying to for not dragging this out. Becky was never going to work with the man who betrayed her husband. I appreciate the territory that doesn’t think we are that it was stupid to believe that was even possible. This also sets up Seth’s revenge tour and what I’m sure will be a huge face turn when he returns. Get well, Seth!
This brings us back to the battle royale. During the match, Jimmy saved Jey from elimination at least twice, including when LA Knight put Jey dead with his own hands. Both men said before the match that they would go after everyone, including each other.
But Jimmy’s barking proved worse than anything else, because he couldn’t watch his little brother fall. When the tables were turned and the shoes were placed on opposite feet? Jey had no problem not only watching Jimmy fall, but also giving him a little push to speed up the process:
Jey arrived a little late but with enough time to indicate what happened. He had no qualms about eliminating his brother because it meant a dance with CM Punk for a championship he clearly values more than anything else.
Jey is torn between being the man his brother and cousin want him to be. Ultimately, he will have to decide who he wants to be for himself, not for his family. Maybe winning the championship will do that, but I doubt it. It turned Roman Reigns into a mob boss and I saw The godfather enough times to know what happens when the reluctant family member ends up dead in the middle of family affairs.
Spoilers for The godfather And The Godfather Part 2 but nothing good.
From time to time, Raw produces a match that I want to highlight even if I have no words to accompany it. Usually my lack of words is a good thing because I can’t adequately describe what I saw. Judgment Day vs. AJ Styles and Dragon Lee was that match this week.
The big news is that we have new tag team champions. Dragon Lee and AJ make an awesome tandem and I support this decision. JD McDonagh and Finn Balor didn’t do it need these championships and they weren’t doing much with them. And seeing how frosty things are in Judgment Day between Finn and Dirty Dom. losing the championships in a match that the latter tacitly organized makes the gesture even more correct. This adds fuel to the fire and now Dom is the only one of the crew with gold. This story between Finn and Dom is hopefully about to explode, thankfully.
It was well paced. It started slowly and continued to speed up. They had plenty of time and made every second count. Watch this match as soon as possible. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. This is one of my favorite tag matches in recent memory and hopefully a sign of things to come from the future champions.
- Penta didn’t really get the revenge he wanted this week. But he got a little. Dirty Dom faced Rusev for the former’s Intercontinental Title in a match that really entertained me and never relented. Dom tried to grab his belts and go home in the third act, but Penta blocked his exit. It looked like Dom might finally get his reward! Penta was there, Rusev had the advantage and Dom looked in a bad mood. But while the referee counted Rusev out, Dom hid the hammer in his boots again and finished last week. Luckily we didn’t get that, but instead we got a remix. The 619 hammer didn’t land because Rusev stopped him. But as he went back and forth with the referee to get rid of the hammer he had found, Rusev looked away from the dirtiest player in the match. Dom nailed him from behind with the low blow (very weird phrase) then finished him with a Frog Splash for the W. Remember when I said Penta had a little revenge? He eliminated Rusev after the match, continuing his road to a triple threat, perhaps at Survivor Series. All of this continues to make me smile.
- Maxxine wins this Intercontinental Championship, right? I really feel like this is where we’re going after her recent match with Becky ended in a disqualification victory. Becky just couldn’t accept Maxxine hanging out with her. And by the way, the challenger was just as impressive this week as the last time these two met. They competed in a different match this time since Maxxine has already proven that she can hang with The Man; rather, it was about an upstart fighting an angry veteran who would do anything to keep the gold. My favorite moment of the match and of Maxxine came when she reversed an arm bar seamlessly into an ankle lock. It was a nice move that didn’t take long but spoke volumes about his progress through the ropes. But back to my previous point. This is now his second victory against the champion. She chose this one because Becky’s frustration got past her and she won the title over Maxxine. This story simply shows that Maxxine got the pinfall and all the loot that came with it. I’m totally up for it at this point.
- Is Nikki Bella putting together La Primera? Nikki saved Stephanie Vaquer from a post-match beating thanks to Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez. This came after a solid battle between Roxanne and the champion, but their NXT bouts looked more effective. Their chemistry, however, is never in doubt, as these matches illustrate, and even this one did. It’s just not my favorite match. Anyway, this relationship between Steph and Nikki is one thing, but it’s also seen relatively little development. But that’s not why I asked this question. Nikki added more than fresh maple syrup as she talked about how proud she is of Stephanie’s accomplishments and how she will always support her. Stephanie admitted that she owed Nikki and, to be honest, Nikki agreed. But it all, especially the hug, felt like a prelude. Or maybe pro wrestling just jaded me and made me think that it’s all out for themselves.
Another awesome Raw. The opener with GM Adam and the boys from The Vision Quest was intriguing, Maxxine and Becky have a great feud in the works, and of course we’re now ready for Jey Uso vs. CM Punk for what they both want more than anything else. Solid events following last week’s big episode.
What do you say, Cage members? Does Jimmy get his brother back and make sure he doesn’t beat Punk?
