Rasmus Hojlund has been dropped to the bench for Manchester United’s final home game of the season against Newcastle.

The Danish striker has scored just one Premier League goal in his last eight matches, having previously scored six in seven.

His worrying form comes at a time when the Red Devils have also struggled for results, with just one win in their last nine games – against relegated Sheffield United.

United are due to play an FA Cup final against Man City later this month, and reports suggest the club are managing Hojlund’s minutes ahead of their most important match of the season.

Roy Keane, meanwhile, told Sky Sports that manager Erik ten Hag was “maybe sending a message to the board” with his decision to drop Hojlund.

He said: “Maybe the manager is sending a message to the board that he doesn’t have many options.

“Sometimes I think managers do that with a few games left to show they need reinforcements. Obviously he hopes to be ready for the cup final.

Manchester United are currently lacking depth up front, with Hojlund still adjusting to English football and Marcus Rashford experiencing a steep decline in goals, going from 30 last season to just eight in all competitions this season.

Ten Hag have selected Bruno Fernandes as their central man for their match against Newcastle, with the Portugal international returning after missing their last two matches.

Manchester United are set for a busy summer following the arrival of minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ahead of their clash with Newcastle, the Red Devils are eighth in the table, three points behind the Magpies in sixth – although Eddie Howe’s side have a much better goal difference of +22 to United’s -4.
