A Michigan Democrat who says she plans to challenge far-left U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib in a primary for an open U.S. House seat this fall has accused the Detroit congresswoman of ‘anti-Semitic rhetoric’ .

“When she has that mic in front of her, she goes crazy and goes to a lot of extremes,” Shanelle Jackson, a former Michigan state representative from 2007 to 2012, told the Jewish Insider in an interview published Friday.

“I really feel like it’s now or never because it’s about being able to kind of silence her and calm down some of the anti-Semitic rhetoric,” Jackson added.

Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American in Congress and a progressive “Squad” member, has come under fire in the past from lawmakers from both major parties for his perceived anti-Semitic rhetoric.

Last fall, for example, Tlaib called Israel a “violent apartheid system” during a debate over funding for Israel’s Iron Dome system.

“I will not support an effort to enable and support war crimes, human rights abuses and violence,” she said of Israel in the House.

Tlaib was also accused of anti-Semitic dog whistle last year when she claimed people from “Gaza to Detroit” were being controlled by people “behind a curtain”. The reference sounded to some like an anti-Semitic plot that wealthy Jewish “globalists” are secretly controlling the world, according to The Times of Israel.

In 2019, the congresswoman was also moved by comments she made about the Holocaust, saying in a podcast, “There’s a kind of calming feeling that I always tell people when I think about the Holocaust. Holocaust and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors, the Palestinians, who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihoods, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, were destroyed” to create Israel.

She said in the interview that she supports a “shelter for Jews” and accused critics of “twisting” her words.

Tlaib has represented Michigan’s 13th congressional district since 2019 and plans to run for the open seat in the redesigned 12th district midway through 2022 this fall after Democratic Rep. Brenda Lawrence said she plans to retire .

But Jackson thinks she can garner enough support to defeat Tlaib.

“I rallied the troops,” Jackson told the newspaper of his impending challenge. “I think there’s a big opportunity there.”

The neighborhood has been historically Democratic, though new lines will include the traditionally conservative city of Livonia as well as Dearborn, which has the largest Arab-American population in the country, and parts of Detroit, the Insider reported.

Jackson lost to Tlaib in 2018, coming in last in a six-man race with 5% (to Tlaib’s 31%), but told the Insider she thinks the new district could favor her “pro” policies. -business” more moderate.

She also said she was a supporter of a two-state solution in Israel, which Tlaib said he opposed.

“Just saying it plainly,” she told the paper, “I believe the United States and Israel are brothers, and I can’t imagine living in a world where our nation doesn’t have the back of each other. “Israel. It’s heartbreaking, to be honest with you, that Rep. Tlaib doesn’t even want to explore that avenue.”

The primary is scheduled for August 2. Jackson, who said she plans to officially launch her campaign in February, is Tlaib’s only challenger in the district so far.
