If you’re familiar with Walmart, you may know that the company hosts a third-party online marketplace where qualified sellers can sell their goods, much like eBay or Amazon.

This means that some, shall we say, not recommended Products could slip through the cracks here and there, and it seems that one seller has managed to advertise ROM hacks based on Nintendo properties, with a Nintendo 64 game titled “Shotgun Mario 64” specifically being highlighted online.

In fact, it seems that Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser learned of these products through a tip via LinkedIn. The original post appears to have been deleted at the time of writing, but screenshots of the tip and Bowser’s subsequent response, in which he simply states, “I appreciate the exposure,” can be seen below.

On its own, that doesn’t sound particularly mind-blowing, but it does come at a rather curious time. Walmart has recently made headlines twice for allegedly canceling pre-orders for Switch releases like Luigis Mansion 2 HD and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door,

While there’s no direct connection between the two stories, it’s clear that Walmart has a pretty close relationship with Nintendo when it comes to new game releases, so we’d be interested to see how both companies react to Nintendo selling hacked ROMs. Presumably, the products would simply be quickly removed, but at the time of writing, a gray cartridge for “Shotgun Mario 64” can still be seen and purchased on the marketplace.
