Announcing the schedule, the EC said the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir (with legislature) and Ladakh (without legislature).
As per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, four sitting members of the Rajya Sabha representing the present state of Jammu and Kashmir will be deemed to have been elected to fill the seats allotted to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The four seats had been lying vacant since the expiration of the term of office of the sitting members due to non-availability of the electorate required to conduct the elections at the time the positions fell vacant.
After the constitution of the State Legislative Assembly of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, an electorate is required to hold the biennial elections, he noted.
The counting of votes will take place on the evening of October 24, one hour after the close of voting.
