The weather will deteriorate as Tuesday approaches. A low pressure system will approach us from the south, giving us chances of rain and snow across Michigan. Who gets what will depend on where you are in the state.
Temperatures on Tuesday will start out in the 30s and 40s, with areas of northern Lower Michigan and the UP seeing temperatures between 30 and 30 degrees and the southern half of The Mitten starting in the 40s. Things will warm up a little from there, but not by much, with areas further south remaining in the high 40s and northern areas remaining in the mid 30s.

Late tonight and early tomorrow morning, rain will spread south to north across Michigan as the low pressure approaches. As it will be warmer in the southern Lower Peninsula, any precipitation will remain rain as dawn approaches. Most of the precipitation further north will stay in eastern UP, where temperatures will be colder at first, allowing precipitation to remain mostly snow.
As we progress through the day, the southern part of the state will continue to receive rain, while the UP could see some rain mixing with snow as temperatures rise in the course of the day. Central and northern areas of Lower Michigan could see a transition from rain to snow during the afternoon.
By evening, most of the rain and snow will have left the state. Lingering rain and snow showers could occur across the Lower Peninsula early on, but will dissipate later tonight. Some icy areas may develop as temperatures drop Tuesday evening.
In terms of accumulation, there won’t be much. In central and northern Lower Michigan, at most an inch of snow resembles the total we expect, if we get any accumulations. In the Eastern UP, snow totals will be about the same, limited to about an inch or less.
Even though there won’t be much snow, still plan for slippery spots on the roads in areas where frozen precipitation is possible. Some locations could also see good amounts of precipitation during the day Tuesday, with up to a half-inch or more of rain expected. Water accumulation on roads could occur. Remember to take your time and travel safely.
