The rain returns to southern California this week. Here’s what you need to know.
The first storm should travel to the region on Wednesday until Thursday, with the next cold front to come on Thursday.
“There is a punch where we will have periods of light to moderate rain for most of the region on Wednesday, then Thursday will have more moderate precipitation,” said the meteorologist of the National Weather Service Robbie Munroe.
There will also be enough cold air and instability so that there are 10% to 20% stormy chances on Wednesday evening until Thursday evening, according to Munroe.
On X, the NWS said that the forecasters were monitoring the “distant possibility” of “small, weak and brief possibility” on Thursday,
The mountains of San Gabriel and the surrounding mountains, including Wrightwood, could see significant snowfall, according to Munroe. Between 6 and 12 inches of snow is possible at altitudes of 5,500 feet and more.
Strong rains could be a concern for recent burning scars, which could cause minor floods and shallow debris flows. The most recent rain storm forced the indefinite closure of the boulevard Topanga Canyon between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive.
There is the potential of two to three additional storms next week, with the first Sunday evening scheduled for Monday and the second on Thursday, said Munroe.
“In terms of quantities of precipitation and quantities of snow, it is a fairly average system,” said Munroe about the next storm of this week. “It’s nothing too ordinary.”
