Ragnar Le Breton: “You can be trashy while remaining benevolent! »

Ragnar Le Breton, Michel Venum, Matthias Quiviger… There are many of you in your head. What should you call yourself?
Yeah, it’s a bit crazy (laughs). But Ragnar Le Breton is good. It’s the name that suits me the best. Ragnar, because I’ve always been told that I looked like a Viking (Ragnar Lodbrok is the hero of the first seasons of the Vikings television series, editor’s note). And Le Breton because I am Breton. Part of my family is from Saint-Pol-de-Léon (29), near Morlaix (29). I have grandparents, a dad and a godfather who are from there. I spent vacations there, all my summers. In fact, I didn’t really break the c… for the name.
You made yourself known on social networks, mainly on Instagram, where you have a million followers. How do you explain this success?
I don’t know if it can be explained. It was unexpected. It has already allowed me to see that in France, there are a lot of people who have the same sense of humor as me! It’s fun. The networks have been a real springboard. It is their strength. Insta gave me visibility and the opportunity to access things more easily. It makes the whole project easier. But that’s not enough. Afterwards, you have to work, do things well, put on a good show. Because when the spectators come to a room to come and see you, they pay. You can’t mess around on the networks and then botch everything you do.
I started to have fun, without imagining a single second that it would take
Where did this idea of making sketches come from?
Basically, I tried to be an actor. During the confinement, we were a little bored in the city where I was, in Normandy. One day, we thought we were going to make little videos with friends. Without pretention. Without telling ourselves that we were going to break through, become known. I started to have fun, without imagining a single second that it would take. And it worked. But I don’t really care about all that. Even today, all I do is with my friends.
Actor, comedian, but also MMA fighter… You are a UFO. Totally unclassifiable.
I am Breton. Breton in everything. I live from passions, I have fun. I like to do what pleases me. It’s great to have the opportunity to test things, to challenge yourself. I don’t want to be on my deathbed thinking, “Damn, I should have done that. »
You have become THE slap specialist. It’s finally quite logical that we find you in the last Asterix… How did it happen?
It’s old ! I had just started shooting videos in which, indeed, I was slapping. Real mandalas, I specify. Guillaume Canet saw what I was doing and contacted me on Insta. But I only shot two days. It was a very small appearance. He put me in the casting at the last moment. But, even for a minute, you can’t refuse an Asterix! It rocked my childhood.
Brittany is the region of my heart. I have always had this very proud side of the Breton
After Insta and the cinema, you embark on a show called “Heusss”, your battle cry. What is he talking about ?
The first part is a “one man”. I’m talking about the different environments I’ve known in my life, mixed couples, my wife arriving in Brittany… I’m also talking about sport, religion. In the second, more theatrical part, other people join me on stage to perform sketches.
You have several dates in Brittany. Happy ?
Downright. It means a lot to me to go through Brittany. This is the region of my heart. I have always had this very proud side of the Breton. I have always claimed it since I was a child. It’s very special for me to come and play there.
Not too stressed?
No. It’s spectacle. Stress is when you go to the doctor and you have lung cancer. Here we are going to have fun. It’s going to be a big laugh with friends. We will take all the forbidden paths together.
It’s a bit like your trademark, the forbidden paths…
Yes, but my show is not just that. There are all the characters that people like, but also sweetness. I made something that looks like me.
I want people to say to themselves at the end of my show that it was funny, daring… and a little cute
In your videos, you go far by playing the racist rednecks, without filter. How would you describe your humor? Trash, black, vulgar…
I’ve always preferred the comics before. I find that they were freer. They weren’t afraid of the “bad buzz” and allowed themselves more things. I was lulled by films like “The Three Brothers”, “The dinner of idiots”, “Les Bronzés”, “Les Visiteurs”. It is this humor that I love. These are my references. Today, I have the feeling that everything is a bit flat. I want you to be able to laugh about everything. But without gratuitous vulgarity, without malice. With kindness at the end. I want people to think that at the end of my show it was funny, daring… and a bit cute. You can say anything, do anything, allow yourself anything as long as you know what you’re talking about and you do it well, without hatred. We can be trash while remaining benevolent!
Do you really think we can laugh at everything with everyone?
In any case, we can do it with the Bretons. Kenavo, my chicken.
